Microsoft VPN is set by default to route internet traffic via the VPN connection. Do the following to use your local internet connection anyway (bypass the VPN for internet)

If you’re using a windows client vpn connection:
-Go to “Properties” of the connection
-Select the “Networking” tab
-Select “Internet Protocol TCP/IP” and click “Properties”
-Click on the “Advanced” button on the General tab (Below DNS settings)
-Under the “General” tab UNCHECK “Use default gateway on remote network”
