Dears,
As you see below I got error message on my running gateway on 8.1.13 as I am trying to upgrade to latest version of SW 8.1.32.

- Disc space?
- Permissions on the folder?

See if there's an installation log.

> Hi guys. I have Ignition running on two virtual machines. I upgraded from 8.0.17 to the latest version (8.1.20) on one of my VMs without any issues by downloading and running the exe install file. When I try to upgrade Ignition on the other VM, I get an error saying that “a running gateway was not detected” (see pic below). The gateway is definitely running so I’m not sure why I’m getting this error.

How much free space have you got on that drive? This guy found that 6 GB was not enough.

Solution done by Inductive automation support 🙂
Unable to upgrade Ignition from 8.1.13 to 8.1.32 receiving error:

```auto
An Error Has Occurred com.inductiveautomation.ignition.installer.common.actions.InstallAction$HaltInstallException: Unable to extract install into 'C:\Program Files\Inductive Automation\Ignition'
```

The stack trace points to it not being able find the Principal User

This typically occurs because the permissions/owner of the initial installation do not allow the current user to modify the install directory

[https://stackoverflow.com/questions/12731277/setting-owner-of-a-file-in-java-ver-7-in-windows-xp-sp2](https://urldefense.com/v3/ __https:/stackoverflow.com/questions/12731277/setting-owner-of-a-file-in-java-ver-7-in-windows-xp-sp2__ ;!!NE85un64!-pX-n5lQyLBd-3E1gjU1rfvif8j9A57ukKzzXfvnT_B8dAEoMXaOsL8_HcqI1WNMWzUyH8SCaiZg6pZOJ11f0nZU$)

The initial owner of the Install directory seems to be 5-1-5-21-1056255678-1622950809-1427260136-60794

Modifying this to be invadmin through the Advanced Security settings on the Ignition folder allowed for the Gateway to upgrade successfully

Gateway seems healthy upon starting with all expected configurations

Perspective session also seems to be working as expected

I’ve been working this same issue. I don’t like the solution of changing the owner of the Ignition folder. The same ownership pattern is seen on multiple gateways: assuming default installation path is used, the _Inductive Automation_ folder is owned by Administrators group and the _Ignition_ folder is owned by the user that ran the original install.

We’re trying to install an upgrade with a different account than ran the original install. It seems to me that if it’s truly an OS permissions issue where my new account doesn’t have access to the Ignition folder, I should be able to surface that with normal file system operations, but I’ve not been able to do that, this “permissions issue” only happens when we’re running the Ignition installer.

I even ran the installer from command-line to turn up logging:

`ignition-8.1.52-windows-64-installer.exe --% "unattended=text" "location=D:\Program Files\Inductive Automation\Ignition" "logLevel=trace"`

This seems to be where it’s running into trouble

```python
com.inductiveautomation.ignition.installer.common.actions.install.ExtractInstallZipAction.execute(ExtractInstallZipAction.java:150)
```

…but we’ve not been able to get down to what system calls are being used inside that method.

So the installer fails and reverts, at the very end tries to copy it’s own log file, %USERPROFILE%\.ignition\install\install.log over to the Ignition root and that fails as well.
