Any guidance on making this big jump would be helpful. 7.8 has been so solid for me but its time to get to the latest version so I can start making use of the newest features. I know there have been some wholesale changes a few times since 7.8… so should I upgrade to say 7.9. then 8.1 then 8.3 or should I just go straight to 8.3?

You will have to take that first option you mentioned since there is no support for a direct upgrade to 8.3 from 7.8 or 7.9

You should be able to go 7.8 -\> 8.1 -\> 8.3.

Whether you put 7.9 in the middle or not is up to you. It's not supposed to be required, but I think people do it anyway.
