I have a gateway installed, and I am unable to take a backup of it. I've tried through both the gateway page as well as from the command line; both throw the same error:

 ![image](https://us1.discourse-cdn.com/inductiveautomation/original/3X/b/8/b85a58265a2953add5e4ccde2d7b4f54f881e500.png)

I've disabled all security scanning software (temporarily), restarted Ignition, and also the server.

Any thoughts on what to try next?

Something outside Ignition is holding a lock on one of the files inside a directory the gateway is trying to include in the backup file.

I'm assuming Windows; you can use a tool like Process Explorer to find out what is locking the file(s):

> **[Process Explorer - Sysinternals](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/process-explorer)**
>
> Find out what files, registry keys and other objects processes have open, which DLLs they have loaded, and more.

I don't see anything external - only Java.

Is there anything internal to Ignition that could be locking this? This is on version 8.1.42.

Look higher than `temp\`, that directory should be excluded from the backup anyways and not causing this issue.

Here's what I'm seeing:

Is the IgnitionGateway.exe expected?

</div>

That's the "service wrapper" process that's in charge of running Ignition itself (so yes, normal/expected). There's nothing else in that list, and backups are still failing with the same error message?

</div>

Correct. I just restarted the Ignition gateway and I'm seeing the same error when I try to create a backup.

No gateway scripts or anything that might be interfering with one of these files under the umbrella of Ignition? No kernel-level AV that might not be showing up in Process Explorer? (is it running as admin?)

You might want to just contact support officially at this point - they probably have more up-to-date knowledge of what might be going wrong here than me.

In case anyone else sees this issue:

I contacted support, and there is a known issue using disk-backed history stores for the MQTT Transmission module in 4.1.22; it seems Cirrus Link is aware and resolving. I converted disk-backed to in-memory and was immediately able to take a backup.

I am also facing same issue. Backup couldnot download, because network issue. For me also background MQTT Transmission Module is running. How to convert disk-backed to in-memory

Have you looked at your gateway logs to look for possible related errors?

(If you cannot find anything, you might need help from IA support. This forum is not support.)

Phil, I agree with you on this of course, and I say the same thing.

However, IA kind of shoot themselves in the foot with this:

You can see how a newcomer could go onto the support section, read the policy, see this and come straight here.

Hmm. That should probably be clarified. We can't open bugs nor look "under the hood".

Make sure you're on the latest MQTT Transmission module--prior to 4.0.22, there was an issue with file locking that could prevent the creation of a gateway backup on Windows if you have a disk-backed history store configured. ref: [Ignition 8.x Compatible Release Notes - MQTT Modules for Ignition 8.x - Confluence](https://docs.chariot.io/display/CLD80/Ignition+8.x+Compatible+Release+Notes)
