I have noticed that Ignition Gateway takes long time(539 seconds) to start when not connected to the Internet. However it starts in 7 seconds when the Internet is connected.

Here is the wrapper log excerpts:-

We need to stop and start Gateways as we have 2 independent servers of which only one can be up at a time so that clients do not accidentally connect to the standby server. After switching to Standby server Ignition Gateway is restarted.
These servers will be accessed only through a local network without access to internet. I am wondering what is causing the delay when internet connection is missing.

You already bolded the problem. If you don’t have a network connection, you must have a local DNS or you must have proper entries in /etc/hosts for anything that might need to be looked up. Basically, your servers themselves (not Ignition) are misconfigured for disconnected operation. ‘localhost’ is a name that **_must_** be resolvable.

Thank you for your quick response. There was some improvement after I changed the name ‘localhost’ to the server’s IP. Gateway modules start time was reduced to ~200 seconds. After uninstalling the OPC-UA module it starts modules start in ~5 seconds. However there is some delay even before wrapper logs start and some wait time during initializing.

I do not understand why is this delay introduced only when not connected to internet

Put a proper localhost entry in your /etc/hosts file. ‘localhost’ _ **must** _ be resolvable.

What is in /etc/resolv.conf when not connected to the internet?

resolv.conf has the entry
nameserver 127.0.0.1

and hosts file
127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain localhost4 localhost4.localdomain4

After enabling detailed logging in wrapper.log we see it takes ~1min initializing logs

I agree that a good localhost resolve is the most robust way, but can we use the IP address in the host override as a workaround?

So, with nameserver 127.0.0.1, your server must be running a local resolver (often dnsmasq in Linux) and that resolver cannot get an answer to inquiries when no network is available. Causing delays. Probably from reverse IP lookups for logging. Anyways, use netstat to find out what process is listening on port 53, if any. Also, consider uninstalling any resolver you might have running, or reconfigure it to not try to ask the internet for name resolution.

When servers don’t have Internet access, commented out all references to name servers in /etc/resolv.conf. This solved the delay in starting up Ignition.
Thanks for all your help.
