8.1 or 8.3 Which should I use

When I said there’s a risk in upgrading later, I meant that the migration itself may add to it. You’re now moving between major versions, which probably requires a special process, and some extra tests.

Mwah, hah, hah! Yeah, that's an unfair comparison. IA is far more reliable.

One thing I'll say is that list of the bugs I've seen reported here on the forums are related to upgrades not migrating settings or something. Or a difference in how things were done in 8.1 vs 8.3 so some things just can't migrate.

On a fresh start, I'd definitely go with 8.3.

I’d start with 8.3 now.

For an upgrade I would typically recommend waiting until at least 8.3.3 based on past experience with version upgrades, things like UDT parameters being broken when updating to 8.0.0 was extremely frustrating and was fixed in within a minor version or 2.

I have yet to experience any completely breaking bugs in a new version of Ignition when starting from scratch in a new version and I have worked with Ignition since before it was first released as Ignition.

I also trust Inductive when they say they have significantly increased their quality control initiatives. They are much further along and have many more very high level customers than they did in 2019 so a game breaking bug now would be much more detrimental than it was when 8.0 came out.

One of the reasons it has taken this long to release right? QA/QC. They wanted it to be rock solid and believe it is.

This would be a different conversation if it had been released months ago, like everyone wanted.

We will trust 8.3 on new projects that we are starting here in the next few months.
