I don’t know what version you are currently running, but the issue with corrupted authTokens preventing startup was resolved in 8.1.37.

Exception faults gateway startup: java.lang.IllegalStateException: Not a JSON Object

This issue has been fixed - poorly formatted auth token files will no longer prevent Gateway startup. The fix will be available in 8.1.37 which currently has an RC1 version available for download.
