I have the same issue, with Ignition 8.1, we have a special application for remote communication using a gateway to communicate Modbus TCP over WIFI and 3G Celular network (With a fixed IP over VPN), i accomplish to maintain connection using the Subscription option on OPC quick client, otherwise, the devise enters on the continuous connect/disconnect loop issue, however, at the moment the OPC quick client menu is closed or changed the loop starts again.
I hope you can provide us a guide to script the Subscription parameters permanently, in this application the tags historic needed is 15 minutes.
