I also have all of the custom properties on the view, not the root or individual components.
I moved the popupTrigger to the root and it is now functional.

Glad you got it working, but I can't see how that would make a difference.
I know, it is strange. It only wants to function within the root, not the view.
Sometimes it´s difficult to get the hierarchy right to assign a function to an element.
