My team has been going over the 7.9 to 8.1 Upgrade Guide as we get ready to upgrade our gateways, and we've come across a question concerning tag paths.
This section of the guide, Tag Paths in Expressions, makes it clear that we need to add the tag provider to all of the tag paths in expressions which assume the default provider. Do we also need to add the tag provider in the Tag Path of a Tag Item in a transaction group, or will those continue to work with the default provider?
I think those will still work without the provider in the path because the transaction groups are project specific, so they should use the project's Default Provider in Project Properties -> General -> Tag Settings.
That makes sense, though so far every place we've found a tag path without the provider specified in an expression has been in a transaction group's item. Could we have gotten away with not sticking the tag provider in those expressions because the transaction groups are project specific?
I think so, yes. I went and looked at some of my transaction groups where I upgraded, and they didn't have the provider in the path.
EDIT:
1.I tried to create a new transaction group, and it won't let me setup a group tag without a provider.
2. My old transaction groups that were created in v7.9 still work even though they do not have the
provider shown in the path.
3. I created an expression item and it still worked without a provider
I think best practice would be to add the provider even if it works without it. Might save some headaches in the future.
