[Bug] Illegal Character Allowed During Tag Provider Creation

  1. Unexpected Behavior
    1. I created a Realtime tag provider named "W&H" on the Gateway. The gateway accepted the name and created the new provider.
    2. When I opened the designer, I only see the System tag provider available.
    3. When I attempt to browse devices, I receive a "java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Provider not found: unknown" error.
  2. Expected Behavior
    1. In the designer, I was expecting to see the "default" provider, my new "W&H" provider, and one additional provider.
    2. I expected to browse devices without error
  3. Troubleshooting Steps
    1. From the Gateway, I used the rename feature to change the name to "WH". Then when I open the designer, I correctly see all the tag providers I expected.
  4. Other Info
    1. Ignition standard 8.3.8

It seems like the '&' character should not have been allowed in my tag provider name, but nothing prevented me from adding it. The error messages weren't necessarily pointing to the '&' as the issue, but when removed the problem resolved.

Yes, you should formally report this bug (open a support ticket) so this gets fixed.

Be prepared to find and whine about such bugs for the rest of your life as long as you insist on using special characters in object names within Ignition. For best result, limit yourself to object names that are also valid as variable names in typical programming languages.

Thanks, I have gone ahead and opened a ticket. Just wanted to spread awareness since I couldn't find any examples of this error online.
