Can't install 8.3 on Mac Sequioa 15.6.1

I downloaded 8.3 on my MacBook Pro running Sequoia 15.6.1. It asks for my admin credentials. I know I entered the correct credentials. The install quits with no error message. In the log I see “optional boot task not present”. How do I get installation to work?

What kind of Mac is this, is it an Intel mac? If so, that’s likely the reason. Ignition 8.3 drops macOS on Intel support and switches to Apple Silicon. Please see relevant post if needed macOS DMG & zip - #3 by gnguyen

Yes, it is Intel. I guess that means I can no longer use Ignition on my Mac?

Older existing deployments are unaffected, but my understanding is that with 8.3 and going forward, we will not be supporting the Intel chipset.

Heck!!!

If you have Docker installed on the machine, that could work as an alternative but sorry to say the Intel based mac is no longer supported for 8.3

Docker will work for running the Ignition Gateway, a VM running Windows or Linux will work for everything.

Has there been any testing to confirm a Win10 or Win11 VM with VirtualBox will work for installing 8.3 on my Intel MacBook Pro? VMWare Fusion is effectively no longer supported and I am having lots of problems with VirtualBox on my machine. It sounds like the best option is Docker?

I've always used Parallels for VMs on a Mac.

VirtualBox has performed terribly, just in general, on every platform I've ever tried it on.

Docker is a good option but again, only gets you a running Gateway. You won't be able to run the Designer on the Mac.

Thanks Kevin, I will check out Parallels. I hadn’t heard of it. It is $65/year, but my priority is to move my existing VMs from VMWare Fusion to something supported. I am also considering upgrading my Mac, which is a significant investment but my existing machine is 6 years old, it might be time. I really prefer to run Ignition native instead of a VM

I just upgraded my 7 year old Intel MacBook, it’s a good upgrade, 20+ hours battery life just wins every time.

David, I appreciate the feedback. Of course my concerns are cost and compatibility with all my other apps. Frankly a machine that serves me well for 6 years has done its job, but it might be time to upgrade. Having to run 8.3 on a VM is not ideal. What MacBook did you upgrade to? Did you go with the nano-texture display?

Just got the 16” Pro mid level one, nothing super special. The upgrading of all my docker images to arm64 was a surprise I had to deal with.
A warning, running Ignition on the base laptop will halve your battery life.

Battery life should be better with 8.3 as an ARM native version of Java is packaged with the Mac installation. 8.1 packaged an amd version so everything had to be run through Rosetta2.

To be fair, I normally only run up ignition on my laptop in docker, which can be shut down super easily when not in use.
