History Manager is not licensed for storage

Hello, I am running into an issue where I have configured a Tag History database that appears to be running fine. After adding a particular tag to historical trending via the Tag Editor, I am not seeing any data being moved into the SQL Lite database, cannot access any tags in Power Chart, and run into the following error in the logs:

“The tag historian module is not licensed for storage. Data will not be stored to ‘demo_db1’”

I am running the trial version of Ignition to experiment with MQTT telemetry, and have ensured that the trial mode is active. I’m not sure what else to troubleshoot here as there is limited info online for this error.

Any help on this subject is greatly appreciated.

Is your trial currently expired and needing to be reset?

Hey Kevin, I have ensured that the trial is not expired and reset my activation.

Is this a standard Ignition install or something like Edge or Maker?

This is a standard ignition 8.1.49 installation running on Windows 11. The reason I used version 8.1.49, is because the MQTT modules are not available for download when using the 8.3 version (unlicensed)

For further reference, I am going through a recently added Inductive University course on Perspective development and have reached the step where I am using the Tag Editor to enable History on a tag, so it can be added to a Power Chart for trending and display. All configurations up to this point, including the SQL lite database setup, have worked fine. The database is shown as enabled and running. The issue here seems to be with licensing of the Tag History module.

Thanks very much for your help, Kevin

I ran out of ideas here so I've reached out to another team to see if they have any idea. Not sure how many people are really around right now since ICC just finished.

You can always give support a call and they can probably figure it out as well.

Check your license page and see if it has a license for history. If not, there might be something your account rep can do to enable the correct history license.

Can you tell me what the license details show for the historian module? Is it in query only mode? Or, does the platform license have the tag_history_query mode?

The license details and module info is the following

Thanks for the reply Kurt,

How can I determine the license details? When navigating to the “license” tab under config → system, it indicates no licenses are active and I am on the trial version.

Is there any license applied here?

There does not appear to be any licenses applied in that section due to being on the trial version:

I also wanted to mention that I feel the database is configured correctly and running, because this licensing error is occurring every 2 minutes, which is the exact interval of change for the tag I am trying to shove in.

Just curious, have you tried restarting the Gateway? Everything so far seems to be matching up, and should allow for storage.

Reporting back that after restarting the gateway machine, the error was resolved, and there is now data from my LoRaWAN sensor read via MQTT being placed into the SQL Lite database. This is a bit odd, as the gateway machine was powered off overnight, and therefor restarted this morning. But regardless, things are now working and I have SQL tag access in the Power Chart. Thanks very much to everyone from the Ignition community for helping out so quickly!
