Hi, I plan to have an ignition edge instance talk to a serial device. Does that require the "Serial Module" add on to be purchased? And what does the serial module add on actually get you? I have used serial python libraries to get data over serial in a script.
It basically gets you access to the system.serial
functions.
Are you planning to write custom scripting to communicate with this?
Yes most of the communication would be a custom script. I have batch files opening putty sessions and running predefined messages right now. But i want to convert to something with a GUI. And Ignition fits the bill if i can use serial devices. I have used Python scriots with PySerial before to interact with these devices so I was hoping this would be similar. Does Ignition Edge license come with serial drivers to talk to serial devices or do I need the add on license? The reason I ask is that the serial license description says it is good for clients and gateways, but what about Edge? Or does that count as a gateway or client? It is a little of both to me.
Edge is a gateway. If you purchase Edge Panel, it can also be client in this sense, if you choose Vision.
