Hi
I’m thinking of using Ignition direct in my Mac (up til now have used it thought a Windows VM). Having downloaded it I can’t seems to find the Gateway Utility where you can monitor the Gateway Status, Start / Stop / Restart etc and once you shutdown the Java 
I can’t seem to restart webpage…

It case it wasn’t obvious, I’m a windows users normally !!! 
In your Terminal app, navigate to your Ignition folder and then use igntition.sh start (or stop or restart). You may need to add execute permissions before the first use.
Basically it’s the same as Linux: https://docs.inductiveautomation.com/display/DOC80/Linux+-+Install#Linux-Install-StopandStartIgnition
