Ignition MCP Server - when and what?

I recall IA posted on LinkedIn that they will be releasing a MCP server for Ignition. Can any of the IA staff give guidance on when that might be? And importantly, what kinds of tools are you expecting to provide? And lastly, will this only be 8.3+ compatible?

There is an ICC presentation from Sep 17, 2025 10:00 AM with Matthew Raybourn and Reese Tyson that will eventually be available to all, but is currently available to anyone with ICC livestream access, which includes covering the module. That is the best current resource about the tools provided.

In summary it shows the module provides features including:

  • User-defined MCP Primitives created in the Designer, organized as: Tools, Resources, Prompts
  • Support for MCP Clients to connect to Ignition

Currently it is slated for Q1 with a beta before. I believe it will be 8.3+.

The first public form of the MCP module will be an "early access" public beta period here on the forum. That initial public beta will add a workspace to the designer where you can create MCP tools, resources, and prompts inside the designer, in a manner roughly analogous to the WebDev module. There will be either no or minimal "first party" primitives available, though our sales engineering team will likely have some Exchange resources available around the same time.

At some point in time after public beta, other Ignition modules will be updated to add first party primitives (created by those modules automatically) that will provide useful context that would be difficult/impossible to retrieve from the scripting-based primitives you create in the designer yourself.

Separate from the designer configuration, there will be a gateway/configuration resource added that you use to "map" primitives from internal providers (either particular Ignition projects or those provided by modules) into MCP server configurations, which will be accessible at different URLs to allow MCP clients to connect to particular MCP servers.

At some point in time, we'll close out the public beta and make a "1.0" version of the module that will be available for sale and included in one of the "solution suites" also mentioned at ICC. This will automatically include all the first party tools and offer the same designer, scripting-based functionality all in one.

The module will only be available in 8.3.

Thank you Kyle and Paul.

I have many ideas on how to leverage MCP, but each will depend on what’s exposed.

I will eagerly await the beta.
