I was looking for the answer to this a few moments ago for a project I'm working on when I stumbled onto my own post:
Changing the Color of a TabStrip Based on the State of a Tag/Multi-state Indicator
The icon parameter lives in the tabData dataset for the tab strip, so at run time, it's a simple matter of changing the column value in the tab's respective row of the tab data.
