Issues Opening a Project from the Designer

I have a project that I am trying to open from the designer, and it will not finish downloading. I have gotten many different colleagues to try and open the project, and the same thing happens for them. This issue has been known since 7/17/2025.


What is the actual filesize of the project (on the gateway, on disk)? A project of at least 135mB suggests something inadvisable was done, like directly or indirectly storing binary data as project resources, i.e. via persistent GUI properties, literals in a project script.

Or is the issue you're reporting "I have a reasonably sized project, but the download window just keeps attempting to download forever"?

Is it stuck at 135 mb and not moving at all from there? Or is it just slowly downloading and never finishing?

Also how long have you been waiting? I know we once had a network issue with one of our gateways at a different facility, I had to work on a new project on that gateway and had to wait almost 20 minutes. In the end it was a network issue and not an Ignition issue so I'd investigate that too!

YES! It will get somewhere between 130-140 mb and freeze. I've tried to let it sit for the entire time I was at work (about 9 hours) and it still never loaded. I've looked into the network and I've ruled that out. Not sure what the issue is.

That's odd, this sounds like more of an ignition issue than a network issue.

Are you able to open other projects? Or is it just one experiencing this issue?

Try opening the gateway and see if you can export the project and download it as a zip. If that works I'd try deleting the project and re-importing it from the zip? I haven't experienced this issue before so this is just a guess but it may be worth a shot!

Yes, all other projects are able to open just fine.

I just tried to download it and import the zip file and this is the error I got.

Yeah I'm assuming this project got corrupted somehow, possibly from one of the ways @PGriffith mentioned. How big is the entire zip file?

We have some pretty big projects that control an entire line of 10+ machines that are only about 8mb and that's one of our larger projects.

Now your options are mostly:

  • If you have automatic gateway backups and you can import an older version of the project try that
  • Restart from scratch on the project
  • Decompress the zip, comb through the project and compare it to a known good project and see if you can remove anything that looks out of place -> compress back to a .zip -> try to re-import

I'd recommend looking in the gateway logs for any errors that coincide with project downloads, but really your next step should be to contact our support department officially so they can take a live look at your system and collect information.

What would be the best way to go about contacting the support department directly?
