Java Update Again

Greetings,

I was hoping to get some insight from this forum as to how best handle Java updates.
In my workplace updates are set to auto. Corporate policy is to auto update but this is windows only. For the most part all java update are allowed by the user. Here and there I have to combat various application specific issues. Other software in my workplace depend on java. Recently my own machine updated to 7.25. Now I cannot launch projects or the designer. Advice with this constant annoyance would greatly be appreciated. The server itself does not get java updates as frequently if that is relevant at all. I am on Win7 enterprise 64bit. Gateway is the latest release.

Why can’t you launch projects or the designer? What’s the error message? Can you turn on the Java console before you attempt to launch? Are you launching from the gateway page or off your shortcuts?

From the gateway page, but I have also tried the desktop links also. The error is something like “class missing exception error” that’s quite vague; I can post or email support tomorrow when I get back to the shop the specific errors. Yes I can open the java console to watch. I normally do. I realize there is an immediate error that need resolved but I was also looking for conceptual or best practice advice. I do love Ignition and what you can accomplish with it so I was looking for the best way to maintain stability while supporting java updates among clients and myself… I am sorry for the vagueness. I will be more accurate with the error tomorrow.

Also on a related topic but unrelated issue, my company uses the citrix desktop system to give us the ability to remotely access ‘a version’ of our desktops which also includes web access. Using this I was previously able to launch Ignition. But since a recent server update this now no longer works. The citrix system also has an Android app called “citrix receiver”. I was able to also use that app on my Android tablet launching my project at home on the tablet using citrix. Thats all over since that recent update too. I must also mention that the users have no access to the control panel on this citrix environment.
I can only attribute this to Java but I cannot be certain. I have updated to the latest release recently but It has worked after that so once again I am not certain. I would just like for Java in general to be more stable or at least maybe the way we manage it…

The screenshot is attached. The error happens before the Java Console can launch. I can await your feedback or go ahead and UN-install all Java and re-install it. Seems that every so often that is the only way to recover. Is it maybe just best practice to NOT update java… That doesn’t really seem like the best idea but would at least maintain some form of stability…

It looks like you might need to try reinstalling Java…

We’re currently working on stand-alone client/designer launchers that will sever our dependency on Java WebStart technology. This should alleviate many of the problems people are having when it comes to launching.

VERY COOL! Not the having to un-install part but that you are working on a method of improvement.
3 CHEERS for IA DEV’s!!!

Just wanted to post back that after UN-INSTALLING all versions of Java then REBOOTING then RE-INSTALLING only version 7-25 that business was able to commence as usual. Looking forward to the coming IMPROVEMENTS. Thanks for the forum response.
