I am using full ignition 8 on a EPIC PR2. No internet access.
I recently upgraded the EPIC FW to 4.0.2.
Backed up Ignition
Successful fix backup file
Installed EPIC FW which has Ignition 8.1.47
Restored from backup
Now it says I have no license.
I see three licenses on my on-line account.
What should I do?
Thanks for your help!
Backup files do not contain license information. The EPIC must have blown away the filesystem.
You will need to contact IA support to get your activation count reset, and you will have to use the offline activation method use it. (Sneaker Net to an internet-connected system.)
In the future, you will need to perform an offline deactivation first.

Phil’s got it right here. EPIC (and RIO) firmware is monolithic.
So a firmware update will wipe the Ignition instance and install a newer version. Perhaps this will change in the future with the 8.3 new file-based configuration.
When updating EPIC firmware, where Ignition is commissioned, licensed, and running, do these steps in order:
- Backup your Ignition project
- Deactivate your license
- Update EPIC/RIO firmware
- Upon firmware update completion, start Ignition through the groov Manage - Ignition page
- Accept settings, commission, and start the gateway
- Restore your project
- Reactivate your license
If you do “strand” your Edge IIoT license (purchased from Opto 22), we can reset it for you. If your license was purchased from IA, contact your rep, and they’ll take care of that for you.

Thanks BensonH,
Vannessa was able to deactivate the license and I have offline-restored the license. Added that extra step to our user guide.
Thanks Vannessa!
