MQTT need to subscribe to receive data?

I am trying to recall MQTT basic knowledge.

If "I am" an Ignition edge, and I am publishing a tag that can be read and write by a remote client.

Do I need to subscribe to my own tag to know if someone (a client) made a write to my tag?

Sorry if my question doesn't make sense..

No, not if using Sparkplug with Cirrus Link products. One gateway can be designating as the controlling gateway, and there's an automatic reverse path for it.
