Musson Industrial's Embr Modules, Licensing Announcement

Release Notice

Embr Module Licensing

To offer a more complete support model, Musson Industrial is introducing optional licensing for the Embr suite. Don't worry, these modules will always remain free to use and open source.

Here's what's changing:

Standard Edition

  • Embr modules are free to use, but will run in trial mode when unlicensed.
  • No functionality will be impacted by an expired trial.
  • You can remove the trial status by purchasing a low-cost license from our web store.

Maker Edition

  • Embr modules are free to use with no trial mode.

Licensing Options

Licenses are offered on an individual (per-module) or suite (all modules) basis.

  • Individual Module License: $50
  • Suite License: $100

All major credit cards are accepted, as well as ACH payments for US-based orders over $250.

After completing an order on our web store, license keys (including activation tokens for leased licenses) will be generated and sent to the email used at checkout. License key generation and distribution are automated and occur every 15 minutes.

Expected Questions

Q: Is Embr still open source?
A: Yes! The entire Embr suite is still MIT-licensed, and this will never change.

Q: Can I continue to use Embr Charts/Periscope/Thermo/SNMP for free?
A: Yes! The modules will report as being in trial mode, but no functionality will be impacted. You will still continue to receive updates.

Q: Why should I purchase a license?
A: A license removes the trial banner and supports continued development of the Embr suite, helping ensure these modules remain useful, reliable, and actively maintained.

Q: What if I upgrade from 8.1 to 8.3?
A: License keys are not tied to a specific Ignition version and will never expire.

Q: Will you offer redundant gateway, integrator, or bulk purchase discounts?
A: We aim to keep licensing simple, affordable, and automated, so there are currently no additional discounts.

Q: I have questions regarding licenses, special setups, edge cases, or long-term support guarantees.
A: We're here for you! For setups that fall outside the standard automated licensing process, please reach out so we can provide guidance.

So do the purchased keys enable Edge usage of the modules?

Keys purchased through the web store are only valid for Standard Edition gateways.

For any other applications, please reach out to us directly :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:.

Hi, could you clarify what the trial banner actually consists of?

Sure.

  1. The trial banner is shown in the Gateway UI:

  1. The module's will display as being in "Trial" mode.

  1. A splash screen will be displayed for ~2 seconds upon designer start.

  2. An icon + license status will displayed in the bottom status bar of the designer. Clicking on this icon will open our documentation website.

The splash screen + designer status bar icon are removed upon license activation.

Since it is open source, consider replacing UNLICENSED in your nag displays with UNSUPPORTED. Because the user really does have an open source license.

Fair point, I agree with that reasoning.

That’s really the whole intent of the license; a formal mechanism for support.

I wonder if @pturmel is getting ideas for Integration Toolkit.

Not the same at all, as my Toolkit is not open source.

Referring to the trial banner and offering a support license, not the underlying source license discussed downthread.

Done, it'll be in the next release.

How is module "Embr-Charts-Ignition83-4.0.0" affected by this?

How does it look on my Perspective View (web)?

This change was implemented in the 2026.5.12 release set:

Charts-Ignition81-5.0.0
Charts-Ignition83-5.0.0

Periscope-Ignition81-0.13.0
Periscope-Ignition83-0.13.0

SNMP-Ignition81-0.5.0
SNMP-Ignition83-0.5.0

Thermodynamics-Ignition81-3.0.0
Thermodynamics-Ignition83-3.0.0

Your Perspective views will look exactly the same, and you can upgrade beyond Charts-4.0.0 without any of your projects being impacted. The license key nags are only present in the designer + gateway config UI.
