I am using an older version of Reporting Plugin (1.1.9) and cannot open a PDF that makes use of the Japanese language font. I did have to update my Adobe reader for this. Is there a method of viewing this PDF or do I have to either update FPMI or find another method?

The native PDF viewer that comes with the reporting plugin is not perfect, and we can only really guarantee that it will be able to open up PDFs that were generated by our report generator.
This is why we also offer the ActiveX plugin for free, which will let you use Adobe Reader within FactoryPMI (but, only with Windows).
