Perspective Popup vs view vs expand dock

Hi,

Say from overview screen, user would want to drill down, navigate to a more detailed screen.

What would you provide and why?

  • a popup view?
  • a primary view?
  • or expand a hidden dock?

Hidden dock is cool, as its there running, just hidden. I am afraid this has its own limitation.

Popup is nice if you want to drag window box. But need to configure popup size, sometimes it doesn't dance well.

What's the benefit navigating directly to a view? aside from its mobile responsive ready?

To me, A detailed view should be a primary view. I'm picturing a more detailed graphic with all of the associated device symbols displayed. A popup should contain a lot more of the configuration side and control, as well as main statuses/modes, alarms, interlocks, trend, filtered audit log, and perhaps your signals where applicable. I don't tend to use side docks much for showing details about something, but I'm sure it depends on the types of projects you work on

Usually from an overview screen, the next more detailed screen would be another view. This aligns with High Performance display levels. When you get to level 3 or 4 is when you would use something like a popup, which is what I typically use. I like the ability to float the popup and not shrink or cover up the main view. Not sure what you mean by popup size doesn't dance well... it does the tango extremely well.

High Performance levels

  • Level 1:

"Big picture" overview with key performance indicators (KPIs), major alarms, and critical process variables, providing a quick situational awareness.

  • Level 2:

Detailed view of specific process units within the operator's control, allowing for more focused monitoring and control adjustments.

  • Level 3:

Displays detailed information about individual equipment like control parameters, trends, and status of specific components.

  • Level 4:

Diagnostic screens with advanced alarm analysis, historical data, and troubleshooting information, typically accessed only when needed.
