Piping Differentiation

Goal: Differentiate various pipe types, without using color.
Ideas:

  • In-Line Text,
  • Tooltips
  • Line Styles (More than the 4 provided)

Question: Has anyone got any of these ideas to work or have any other suggestions?

For some of our customers we use line thicknesses to differentiate between various lines. Since we're oil and gas, we use (in Vision) widths of 5 for main process lines, 3 for liquid process lines (like glycol, amine, etc), and 1 for any slop/dump/discharge lines (all solid). Lines connecting PID blocks/symbols, select blocks, analog input graphics to the process lines are a width of 1 but dashed.

Thank you for the suggestion!
I am trying to differentiate eight (8) various pipe types, so line thickness may not be applicable. But maybe if they can be grouped, I will look into the suggestion. Thanks again.

Being able to vary 2 things to 3 differnt values you can have up to 9 representations. Throw in a column for 3 different text values and you gain an additional 18 variations.

For instance:

Possible Line Style's: Solid, Dashed, Mid Arrow
Possible Line Thickness: 1, 3, 5

Type Number |Line Type | Line Thickness

Type Number Line Type Line Thickness
1 Solid 1
2 Solid 3
3 Solid 5
4 Dashed 1
5 Dashed 3
6 Dashed 5
7 Mid Arrow 1
8 Mid Arrow 3
9 Mid Arrow 5

I did different sizes for different applications just like this. It really does make it easy to see the different parts of the process
