I set the Datakey of barcode to the built in datakey “Page”. However, the barcode shows the text “Page” instead of numerical page number 1,2,3….
I did the same for a textshape on top of the barcode, and it works.

On the Properties tab, use dynamic key on the Datakey property:
Right click to bring up the context menu. Then “Page” should now work.
After changing the Datakey to a dynamic key try using the Key Browser (in the Properties tab) to select the built in Page key.
If I change the Datakey to to a dynamic key and test, it does show the text “Page”. Once I updated the Datakey field with Page, I see the page number.

In 8.1 Built In keys did not work with dynamic key Bindings. So if you’re using 8.1 then this might be the reason it’s not working for you.
