SIMATIC NET OPC UA Server addressing

Hi all, I am trying to connect to some existing S7-300 via an existing SIMATIC NET OPC UA server using the Ignition OPC UA client.

I am following this guide Siemens S7-300/SIMATIC NET OPC Addressing in Ignition | DMC, Inc. and it has worked for all of the data types but I am not sure how to address a string data type. Anyone have experience with this?

Doesn't the SIMATIC NET OPC UA server expose tags via browsing using their symbolic names?

Yes that can be enabled but unfortunately this old PLC is using symbolic names with "." and can't be exposed so I have to use the direct addressing method like in the article.
