system.tag.storeTagHistory information

I see that 7.4 added the script function system.tag.storeTagHistory and was wondering…

  1. What’s the purpose of the tagprovider variable since the docs say it doesn’t need to exist nor do the tag paths need to be in the tagprovider?
  2. Can you provide an example script using this function.

I’m looking for some other information too.
Unfortunatly there’s no examples in the manual
