Tag Creation

Hello all,

I am having problems with the designer - It freezes and crashes intermittently and cannot be revived until system restart, causing huge delay. I am currently running tests on my module, and the tests involve repeatedly creating and deleting tags for Arduino/Modbus devices.

Is it possible to create tags for a device using the SDK?

Thank you.

What does your module do and what are you doing in the designer when it crashes?

Are you asking if you can programatically create new Ignition tags under an existing provider?

Hello Kevin,

I’ve just discovered that the designer crashes whenever I copy something onto the clipboard anywhere in the system
It also turns out I dont have to restart the system, clearing the clipboard and restarting the designer seems to be enough. I tried increasing the memory allocated to Ignition, but it didn’t solve the problem.

Regarding tags, yes that’s exactly what I mean. I looked at the SimpleTagProvider example module, and I’ve seen how to create tags in a custom provider and add it to the gateway, but I am unable to set the OPC item path so that the created tag points to an address on an existing device.

Thank you.

What OS are you using when your Designer crashes? (and what version of Ignition?)

Is there any output in the Designer’s console when it crashes? (You might not be able to copy it, but you should be able to get a screen shot.)

Hello Kathy,

I’m on Ubuntu 14.04, and the console freezes along with everything else… no useful information.

Okay -

I worked out the tag creation issue, and the designer and me have reached a detente. Runs smoothly as long as I clear my clipboard before starting, and make sure not to copy/paste anything.

I made a bug ticket to check out your freezing issues. I haven’t seen this in Ubuntu, but when I’m running Ignition in a VM I’m not doing much outside of Ignition, so my clipboard is empty.

The designer issue is solved in 7.8.
