I've got a server supporting multiple work centers that I would like to upgrade from 7.9 to 8.1.x. I've gone through the projects, and there do not appear to be any gotchas, the biggest hassle will be installing the new client on the factory floor pcs.
One major work center is going to be shut down for relaction, but the other 6 or so will be still running. Is it a viable process to do a full backup of the gateway and install it on a different server running in trial mode to keep the other 6 work centers running? Only the primary work center has clients, the others are all purely data collection. My thought is basically gateway backup, restore, and enable/disable projects individually between production and the trial server, then upgrade the production server and disable the trial server.
Problems with this approach?
Thanks!
Both Gateways will be connected to the same databases and PLCs at the same time.
Whether this is just an annoyance or catastrophic depends on what you are doing with those connections.
Totally fair answer. My thought was to sequentially enable projects on the trial server as i disable on the production one in preparation for the upgrade.
Database connections, devices, tags, etc... are not part of any project. They are global resources. They exist whether your projects are enabled or not.
Your tags will exist, devices get polled, tag history get stored, etc...
Maybe this isn't applicable to your case, but you just need to be thinking along these lines.
