I know it is possible to launch vision clients on a RPi but is there a way to natively install and use Client Launcher as you would on any other machine yet? Just wondering as this would save huge costs on system installs as RPi's are cheaper and easier to maintain than traditional HMIs Computers. For instance, NUCs are typically at least triple to quadruple the price of a 8GB RPi here in the UK. When we install in data centres for instance, we may have ~24-30 HMIs so it is a fairly substantial amount.
Also, for people using RPis for your Perspective HMI's is there a recommended way / product to get the USB P.D. 5V 5A from 24VDC Panel Supplies? We are just starting to look into them as Perspective HMI's and hoping others have advice.
You cannot run vision clients on RPi like other supported hardware because of Java. I think the reason is that IA does not license a compatible Java version for the RPi silicon. You can still run a vision client, you just have to bring your own Java which makes it unwieldly and more work to update, but not impossible.
For vision, you are better off with fully supported hardware in the long run, IMO.
Perspective works the best for RPi in a kiosk type setup. Here is a thread with some good info on that.
For 5V/5A from 24V, you would need a DC/DC converter of proper spec. My RPi setups, running Perspective, use PoE with a 5V/5A power splitter on the end. The Pi 5's auto detect the power supply, and if it isn't an official supply, it limits the USB power output. You have to add usb_max_current_enable=1 to the config.txt file if using a generic, but capable, power adaptor.
If you’re needing 5V in a control panel, you’re likely doing something wrong.
In most countries, panel building standards don’t allow consumer hardware to be installed in industrial settings. A lot of insurance companies also void claims when hardware is used “for a purpose other than the manufacturer intended”.
That said, the Revolution Pi by Kunbus is a pi based industrial computer that has all the relevant standards compliance to satisfy these issues. I have used heaps of them.
Also check out the Siemens IM-315A panel screen, beats pretty much everything price wise and works nicely on Rpi.
Thanks for this! Didn't know that the regular Pi's where so delicate. After reading this looked at various Reddit posts with people reporting issues - primarily in extremely environments which I don't typically encounter, but will still steer clear and go for a Pi CM4/5 solution (the RevPi stuff looks good and still cheaper than other HMI Machines we use).
I've owned many Pi's but have abused them and they always seemed resilient with the MicroSD card being typically the thing that dies so I assumed that setting the Pi to read-only would be fine! I've also seen people talking about using Pi5's on LinkedIn and here. The official RPi website also didn't provide much insight as to what was classified as commercial grade and industrial grade when initially looking.
The 5V PSU genuinely didn't strike me as too odd to be honest. In various non-critical applications we use LoRaWAN devices (Space Temp Sensors, Door Sensors, etc) and the typical LoRa Gateway we uses supports either PoE or 5V ~1A USB-C input. We don't have PoE Switches in panels so we just put in a industrial 24-5V DC-DC Converter) and the gateway in question is marketed as a Industrial LoRaWAN Gateway and rated for Industrial use.

Thanks! Yeah been looking at various tutorials for Kiosk setups. As per David's comment I'll be looking into PiCM4/5 solutions instead of using typical RPi's.
Was aware that it was something to do with the JRE just never knew exactly what ashame it seems we won't be getting a Vision Client launcher for this flavour of hardware, especially as Vision took a major seat on the back burner since the unveiling of perspective .
