Is it possible to change the background color of a template created in vision
If so, can I use binding to change the color or is there another way of doing it?
Yes; templates have a background property.
You can add custom color properties to the template, and you can bind your internal component properties to the custom properties.

Just elaborating Justinedwards post. you are able to bind the background colour property of vision template. If it does not appear, try to modify your view to show all parameters

I find that filter to be somewhat unintuitive. Here is a feature request I submitted for improving it:
