Gateway backups are zip files.  If your OS isn't smart enough to notice this and automatically open it with a Zip utility, change the file extension to .zip.  (Notably, Windows is too stupid to recognize the file type.)
I think he is asking if inside the .zip file is there anywhere where the ignition version of that project is saved.

As Phil said - .gwbks are just zips, so you can open them in any archive viewing tool and look at the backupinfo.xml file it contains.
Kindling offers a graphical way to do this, and includes some other Ignition specific niceties (such as browsing inner IDB files) but is by no means required for the basic operation:
I would hope anyone looking inside a gateway backup for information about the backup would intuitively consider backupinfo.xml as a likely source...
